The Goal: $50,000 for Two Water Tower Reconstructions in Liberated Kharkiv Region
During Ukraine’s 2022 liberation of Stariy Saltiv, the county’s infrastructure was destroyed as a result of the shelling and the heavy fighting. Before locals can return to their homes, water infrastructure needs to be restored to these communities.
The trusted and well-respected local NGO Dobriy Diyi (trans. “Good Actions”) has prioritized the repair of two water storage tanks in Stariy Saltiv County, located in Kharkiv Oblast. forPEACE is fundraising to help them reach this goal.
This water storage tank in Stariy Saltiv would stabilize water access for approximately 78% of the village — 1,816 households and 32 small businesses.
The water storage tank in the village of Molodova would stabilize the water access of an additional 143 households.
Local Partners:
The NGO Dobriy Diyi (trans. “Good Actions”) is an exemplary grassroots organization. Founded in 2009 by residents of the community, they proactively meet the needs of the 22 villages that constitute the Stariy Saltiv County. Prior to the full-scale invasion, their focus was sustainable economic development and cultural preservation projects.
When the Russian invasion began, Dobriy Diyi transformed to provide relief for communities who overnight found themselves under Russian occupation.
They organized bread runs and other “underground” aid deliveries under active artillery fire across the county that were nothing less than heroic. When the Russian occupiers informed them they would only be allowed to continue the bread deliveries if they shared the bread with the occupiers as well, the community collectively decided to go without bread.
Post-liberation, they now focus on rebuilding their community.

The Community:
Stariy Saltiv is a county to the east of the city of Kharkiv. Located a mere 30 kilometers from the Russian border, its pre-invasion population of almost 8,000 residents fell under Russian occupation when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian forces successfully liberated the county seven months later in September 2022. During that time, Stariy Saltiv served as the demarcation line between Russian occupied territory and Ukrainian controlled land.
During the cold winter months, half of the community became isolated as they resided on the other side of the river and the bridge had been destroyed. Residents would walk across the frozen river carrying bags of apples and potatoes to share their remaining storage of food.
